The holy grail of computer animation is to create digital humans that can pass for the real thing -- in other words, to cross the "uncanny valley." The problem with the uncanny valley is that the closer we get to the real thing, the more these almost-real humans repulse us. Blame evolution for that. I talk with animators at the game studios Naughty Dog and 3Lateral, and the ILM animator who brought Peter Cushing to life on Rogue One about what it takes to get to the other side.
